Help with Gluten-free and Casein(Dairy)-free diet?
January 32009
Does anyone know of any products I can use? I am looking for a butter, bread and yoghurt that are both gluten and dairy free. I live in Melbourne, Australia, so if you know where i can find these it would be greatly appreciated!
The best kind of dairy-free yogurt I have found is made with cultured coconut. It is made by a brand called So Delicious. I don't know if this is available to you in Australia or not but it is worth a try.
The reason I suggest this is because soy is not the health food people think it is. Plus it is a main allergen so if you eat too much of it, you can become allergic to it as well.
The coconut yogurt is very yummy!
You also might want to try goat yogurt. It is not casien free but has less of it than cow's milk. It is much easier to digest but it depends upon your body and your tolerance level.
As far as bread goes, the best thing you can do is make your own. I am sure you can buy gluten-free ingredients in Australia but if you can't, there are many websites you can order supplies from.
The best GF cookbooks for bread making I know about are by Bette Hagman. You can order them from Amazon. I like her Gluten Free Gourmet Cooks comfort Foods, but she also has just a bread book that I would like to get.
The GF breads are very good! Not like store-bought frozen GF bread. It may take some time to get it right but Bette makes it very easy.
I also wrote a blog post about how to bake gluten-free:

There are a lot of tips in there.
As far as butter goes, the best thing I have found to substitute is called Coconut Butter. It is made by Artisana. It is so yummy, but a little sweet. (no sugar though). You can spread it on your bread and its great.
good luck to you!
