Question about gluten free diets…?
December 292008
I don't think I am allergic to gluten, however, whenever I eliminate it from my diet, I usually end up losing weight more sufficiantly.
Could this be because I do have a slight sensitivity to gluten. Should I possibly just eliminate it completely?
Any knowledge about this topic please contribute!
When you cut out gluten, you also cut out a lot of fat without realizing it. If you think about it, all pastry has fat to make it, pasta always comes with oil or a greasy sauce, pizza has loads of fatty cheese and stuff on top (though we don't really notice this), bread goes with butter…
So when you cut it out for just a little while, you probably don't substitute for it - not like for like, anyway. You end up cutting out lots of fat (which has like three times as many calories as carbs and protein), so you lose weight. After a while on the gluten free diet, you find ways to substitute for the things you haven't been eating, and the weight loss stops.
Mind you, if you are gluten intolerant and you cut out gluten, you may find your appetite goes away, because you are able to absorb everything you are eating properly, so that would also help.
