KiKi, my 8 yr old Siamese has constant diarrhea. Vet has no answers for yrs, now….any suggestions?
November 52009
KiKi was perfectly healthy until about age 6; then in the past few years he seems to be very sickly having constant diarrhea. He has been to the Animal Hospital several times for this problems~seeing different Vets to NO avail. He’s been on Prednisone(sp?)with no positive result: Several stools samples were tested for parasites and none were found: I’ve tried a Gluten-Free diet and/or a Grain-Free diet, and no change. No sure how to help my little guy??? He’s such a Lovable cat, but I can’t take much more, and not sure how to help him!
Yes..KiKi is an indoor Cat only. All of the Vets that he did see were within the same clinic;so, that makes sense that they would all agree with eachother!
I don’t feed him any wet food at all, as it seems to make his diarehea 10 x’s worse! He has been on the z/d diet from the Vet. He is as skinny as a rail. Sometimes I just wet the Grain-Free hard food so he’ll eat it quickly & at all. He always eats moist food like he is starving, & doesn’t seem to want to take the effort to eat the hard stuff.
I do have another Cat, Scruffy 10, who has none of the same symptoms as KiKi.
KiKi is Negative for both Feline Leukemia and Feline HIV.
The Vet did tell me that the only way to tell FOR SURE was to open him up and get a biopsy of his intestine. I really didn’t want to put him thru that. Especially since I have my doubts about him coming out of ansethesia.
I just can’t beleive they can not just treat him for whatever the biopsy would reveal.
I realize that may not be the "logical" way of treatment, but it’s like the Vets are just juicing my dollar and giving me NO answers. I have already spent a TON of money on this little guy, and can not afford to spend much more. Especially since his health is not getting any better, and he continues to have the same problem.
Oh yes, KiKi has been on both prednisone and flagyll (sp?)
Your cat may have IBS,( Inflammatory bowel disease). Did you vet check for that? Was he tested for Feline Leukemia or Feline Aids? These are but a few causes of constant diarrhea in cats. For more information about this issue, visit: In addition to the prednisone did your vet try flagyl? He may have some kind of intestinal bacterial infection, which flagyl may help.

If this were my cat and my vet was not able to arrive at a diagnosis, I would seek a second opinion, and look for a feline only vet in my area. Since these veterinarians only work with cats, they are really up to date about all the conditions that should be explored and ruled out.
Have you taken him off all dry food? I had a female domestic that even if she ate any type of dry food- even the grain free products, she would have constant diarrhea, but as soon as she was returned to a grain free moist diet, the problem resolved. Our vet suggested that she may have been allergic to something in the dry food itself that was causing the problem obviously.
While you have been to a number of veterinarians with no answers, do seek a feline only vet if there is one near you. There are several tests which should be done beside testing for parasites.
I know you are frustrated with no answers, but hang in there and keep having him checked out. I was beside myself with worry about our female with persistent diarrhea and it was only with removing any dry food from her diet was the problem resolved. We have stopped feeding all dry food, in fact for many years now.
Good luck with your KiKi.
