London’s secrets………?
November 82009
Has anybody found any amazing shops in London, those one-off places on the corner? Vintage, retro, jewellery, book shops, Beatles records? Or any cafes/restaurants that do gluten-free food? How about any interesting areas?
Basically, if you love something special in London - TELL ME!
If you go to Seven Dials, which is part of Covent Garden area, there are lots of great shops, all one-offs. It’s a long time since I was there, but I remember a doublefronted shop called Mysteries that sold all new agey stuff, a huge shop that had nothing but buttons of different kinds on 2 floors, a kite shop… Of course, these may be gone, but there’s bound to be quite a few interesting ones. You don’t go to Covent Garden underground station, it’s easier to get there from Holborn - but you will need to ask directions. I used to come out the station on Kingsway, turn right to get onto High Holborn and then go to the left, follow the lefthand pavement and you should find it round a corner.
There used to be a vegetarian Indian cafe there, as well. Like I said, it might not still be there, but that area is full of little unusual shops.
possibly gluten intolerant, ideas?

I’m waiting for my blood work to come back, but since I have IBS, I have heard that eating more gluten free products may help. So, in the end I’ll either be eating a little more gluten free, or I’ll have to completely.
Anyways, I know trader joe’s has a lot of good selections, but I was wondering where else you all shop? Also, do you recommend any brands that still taste the same? I mean this in terms of cereals, breads, deli meats, pizza’s
, etc.
Thanks so much!
Good luck getting a definitive diagnosis. If you are diagnosed with celiac disease you will need to follow a strict gluten free diet. Even if you do not receive a celiac diagnosis you may want to try to be completely gluten free to see if that fixes your IBS. Reducing gluten may help, but it may not be as helpful as being gluten free for several weeks.
I am glad you mentioned Trader Joe’s. I am sure that this will be quite helpful for you. I do a lot of shopping at Wal-Mart. Their Great Value store brand labels things as gluten free. This has significantly helped in keeping my grocery bill down. Gluten free shopping can drain the bank account quickly. I also get some of my flours from Asian food stores. This can help save money on flours, but you need to check the manufacturer. Just because it is rice flour or tapioca starch does not mean that it has not been cross-contaminated with gluten.
For cereals my family eats a lot of Chex. The gluten free kinds of Chex are labeled.
When in doubt call or check the website of manufacturers. There are a lot of ingredients that contain hidden gluten. There are also a lot of items cross-contaminated in the manufacturing.
I get recipes for making things at home from http://www.allglutenfreerecipes.com
I hope this is helpful. Be patient as there is a lot to learn about the gluten free diet. Remember that you are not alone. There are many more of us out here going through the same struggles learning what to eat and not to eat. In the end, you will feel so much better that it will all be worth it!
